Hàn Gắn’s songwriting is rooted in observation

Hàn Gắn stand at the crossroads of punk, post-rock, and psychedelia, with their name—meaning “heal” in Vietnamese. Comprised of Brian Nicewander and Matthew Eng, the duo’s creative journey led them to Washington, D.C., where they crafted their first songs from a high-rise apartment overlooking the Potomac River and the U.S. Capitol.

For Brian, the essence of Hàn Gắn’s songwriting lies in observation. “It starts with watching the world around us, capturing the essence of what we see. Our goal is to inspire others to question their surroundings and reconnect with their own intuition.”

Matt, reflecting on the nature of being a musician, adds, “Don’t take it too seriously. Music is meant to be played and enjoyed. It’s about the journey and the emotions it stirs, not about how others perceive it. Music is art—create it, and the rest will follow.”
